Herbalife Publicity Report

Dear friends,

As part of managing our publicity and media relations activities worldwide, Herbalife monitors the worldwide news media and prepares a bi-weekly publicity clip report.

The Company is very pleased to offer you the clip report for your own information. Because of the worldwide LA Galaxy sponsorship/jersey news coverage, this particular report is quite large. Very exciting!
We hope you are pleased to see the extent of positive news coverage Herbalife is receiving around the world.

Best regards,
Leon

Beckham, solo figli e soccer | View Clip
07/23/2007

MEGA-BUCKS BECKS
07/22/2007
Daily Star

DAVID BECKHAM has already repaid the massive investment LA Galaxy have made in him, says owner Tim Leiweke.

Beckham (inset) will pocket a guaranteed 125million during his five-year stint in the USA and has the potential to earn another 100m on top of that.

The mind-boggling figures come as no surprise to Real Madrid marketing director Miguel Angel Sanchez - who was desperate to keep Beckham in Spain.

He said: "I estimate he was worth around 300million in revenue to Real.

"And if things go well in America there is no reason why LA Galaxy can't get close to those figures."

Beckham's signing seemed a huge gamble for the Anschutz Entertainment Group, the Galaxy's backers. But even before the former England skipper had landed in the States, the club had shifted 250,000 No.23 shirts with Beckham's name on the back.

So while the drop in football standard could be a headache for Becks, there will certainly be no problem filling his pay packet.

AEG president Leiweke revealed: "David has paid for himself already. This has been a good financial arrangement for David and it has been a very good investment for us."

Beckham has negotiated Major League Soccer's biggest-ever salary of 3.25m a year. He is also on a lucrative bonus system involving the sale of shirts and will trouser a slice of the increased revenue from rocketing attendance figures.

Luxury suites at the Galaxy's Home Depot Center ground are sold out and the club has clinched a 10m shirt sponsorship deal with Herbalife.

There are also big TV deals hinging on Beckham having the desired effect on a still largely cynical American sporting public.

The biggest concern in the States this week hasn't been whether Becks could shake off an ankle problem in time to face Chelsea last night, but the countdown to San Francisco's Barry Bonds overhauling Hank Aaron's alltime record of baseball home runs.

There was anxiety over the way the Galaxy - minus the injured Beckham were dumped 3-0 by Mexican side Tigres UANL in The World Series Of Football. And coach Frank Yallop probably has more to lose.

In fact, the Canadian-born former Ipswich player is under severe press u with talk of Jurgen Klinsmann or eve n Beckham's former Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello being lined up as potential replacements.

One thing is certain, after all the money spent, no one at the Galaxy w accept the side struggling near the bottom of the Western Conference.

COMMENT Misguided Becks appeal CHRISTOPHER CALDWELL
07/21/2007
Financial Times (News and Features)

Ninety per cent of Americans, polls show, cannot name a single player in
Major League Soccer, the US professional league. Important matches go
untelevised, attendance can hover at 2,000 even in big cities, and many
players earn the minimum salary of just Dollars 11,700 (Pounds 5,700) a year.
Americans don't like the sport much. In the 1970s, novelty-seekers
filled stadiums for a couple of seasons when the North American Soccer League
signed such international stand-outs as Pele, George Best, Franz Beckenbauer
and Johan Cruyff, but the league was broke by 1984. Now David Beckham, the
gifted English midfielder late of Manchester United and Real Madrid, has been
enlisted to give American soccer another shot in the arm. He was scheduled to
play his first match this weekend for the Los Angeles Galaxy, one of the
worst MLS teams.

It is unlikely that US soccer moguls believe Mr Beckham, on his own, can draw
supporters more effectively than an entire platoon of even better players did
30 years ago. More likely they believe that something has changed since the
1970s: not Americans' susceptibility to soccer, but their susceptibility
to marketing. The campaign to familiarise Americans with Mr Beckham has been
unprecedented. Its centrepiece was a racy photo shoot of Mr Beckham and his
wife, Victoria, the pop singer Posh Spice, in W magazine. Another front in
the publicity offensive, Mrs Beckham's reality television show,
collapsed after its first one-hour episode was savaged by US critics. But
together, these efforts give a good idea of the Beckhams' philosophy. It
is that sex appeal, or sheer style, can sell anything.

MLS and the Galaxy are not taking much of a risk with

Mr Beckham. In press accounts of his deal with the team, the figure of
Dollars 250m has been thrown around, but that is not a hard number. It is the
maximum that Mr Beckham could earn from endorsements, profit-sharing and
other incentives if he really caused US soccer to take off. His on-field pay
comes to Dollars 5.5m per year over five years, which is in line with stars
in the more mainstream American sports. There are 17 baseball players in Los
Angeles alone who make more, and some make many times more. The 44-year-old
Roger Clemens is getting Dollars 18m to pitch half a season for the New York
Yankees. In 2001, the shortstop, Alex Rodriguez, signed a 10-year contract
with the Texas Rangers for Dollars 252m.

If Mr Beckham is like most people, the incentives in his pay will make him
less spontaneous in the way he markets himself. Cold calculation, not
irrepressible high spirits, is responsible for the decision to market Mr
Beckham's celebrity over his athletic prowess. This is a novelty for US
sports fans, who, to a surprising extent, have almost no prurient curiosity
about their athletes' personal lives. Private dramas make news only to
the extent that they affect an athlete's play (for example, an arrest
for steroids or an injury sustained in a bar- room brawl). There have been
egotistical athletes who thought their on-field exploits gave them a personal
magnetism (the New York Yankees' slugger Reggie Jackson in the 1970s),
but the public seldom agreed with their self-assessment. There have been
exhibitionistic athletes (the androgynous Dennis Rodman of the Chicago Bulls
in the 1990s), but the public seldom took them seriously. American athletes
have never been "celebrities", in the sense of having a public
profile independent of their on-field performance. There is no large natural
audience in the US for gossip about, and pictures of, Mr Beckham, as there
would be if he were a politician or movie star. To whom is this publicity
campaign supposed to appeal?

Sex can be used to market anything, of course, from lingerie to beer, but it
has rarely occurred to US athletes to use it. It would be perilous. Sports
are family-oriented in the US, as are many of the products sports sells, from
homeowner's insurance to station wagons. Soccer has a more familial
audience than most sports, appealing to American parents primarily as a team
sport that poses less risk than baseball or football of knocked-out teeth and
broken bones. Of the 15m Americans who played soccer last year, 10m were
children.

Perhaps athletes' endorsements have, like so much else, become a matter
of niche marketing, making it possible to titillate one

audience and peddle breakfast cereal to another. But probably not. To
"brand" oneself as a sex symbol can jeopardise endorsements of the
products athletes traditionally

endorse. US consumers have a history of banding together to put pressure on
entertainers from Janet Jackson to the Dixie Chicks for actions they see as
immoral or improper.

As the country grows richer and less equal, though, the economy of sports has
been reconfigured towards the enthusiasms of the rich and away from the
enthusiasms of families. An ever-increasing percentage of teams' income
comes from "luxury boxes", catered enclosures seating 20 or so,
which are better venues for corporate entertaining and socialising than for
watching a ball game. Children are less and less a presence at night-time
sporting events. The main sponsor of LA Galaxy (and a main source of Mr
Beckham's endorsements) is Herbalife, a maker of diet products and a far
cry from the motor oil and pick-up trucks that are the bedrock of traditional
American sports sponsorship. Predatory paparazzi entered the world of
American sports this spring, peddling to the New York tabloids photos of the
aforementioned Alex Rodriguez, now with the Yankees, in the company of an
unknown blonde.

A change is under way in the sociology of American sports, which reflects a
shift in wider society. For now, the Beckhams appear to misunderstand the
market they are selling into. But that market is changing, and they might
know something we don't.

LA Galaxy Neuer Fussball-Krösus oder «Thekentruppe»? | View Clip
07/20/2007
20min.ch

Galaxy has signed a sponsorship contract with Herbalife, a dietary food supplement manufacturer. The company will pay 3,5 to 5 million dollars for chest advertising of the Galaxy football team till 2011. ABC and ESPN channels are going to broadcast the MLS games but the ratings of the football games are never as high as American football, baseball, basketball and ice hockey. With Beckham's transfer ratings are expected to be high again like when Pele was playing. American people also love super heroes. The number of audiences increases if DC United's player Freddy Adu is playing. With the effect of Beckham and Zidane the number of audience is expected to be doubled.

As the country grows richer and less equal, though, the economy of sports has been reconfigured towards the enthusiasms of the rich and away from the enthusiasms of families. An ever-increasing percentage of teams' income comes from "luxury boxes", catered enclosures seating 20 or so, which are better venues for corporate entertaining and socialising than for watching a ball game. Children are less and less a presence at night-time sporting events. The main sponsor of LA Galaxy (and a main source of Mr Beckham's endorsements) is Herbalife, a maker of diet products and a far cry from the motor oil and pick-up trucks that are the bedrock of traditional American sports sponsorship. Predatory paparazzi entered the world of American sports this spring, peddling to the New York tabloids photos of the aforementioned Alex Rodriguez, now with the Yankees, in the company of an unknown blonde.

A change is under way in the sociology of American sports, which reflects a shift in wider society. For now, the Beckhams appear to misunderstand the market they are selling into. But that market is changing, and they might know something we don't.

The star of a new galaxy

THE LA GALAXY BOSSES WILL BE HOPING THAT THE ACQUISITION OF DAVID BECKHAM WILL TRANSLATE INTO HIGHER REVENUES AND GLOBAL VISIBILITY FOR THE CLUB

BY SAIBAL CHATTERJEE

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder David Beckhams stateside foray isnt yet a week old. But, following a glitzy reception at the Los Angeles Galaxys Home Depot Center Stadium, a debate is gathering momentum. Will the $500,000 that the Major League Soccer club will spend on the charismatic soccer star be worth it? Will his $250 million right foot deliver the goods when he takes the field for Galaxy?

Sceptics are already saying that his mere presence on the turf wont be enough: Beckham, currently grappling with injury, will have to start performing in the arena of play to justify the enormous expenditure that Anshutz Entertainment Group, the company that owns LA Galaxy, will incur on keeping him for five years. After the grand reception that was accorded to him by Galaxy fans the day he landed in Los Angeles, Beckham said: 'My real goal is to take soccer to a different level here. If I can do that, then Ill be very proud of that. If I cant, it wont be for the want of trying.' MLS is over a decade old now, and its high time it received a shot in the arm. For sure, MLS has never seen the active participation of a soccer luminary as big as Beckham. The spin-offs will be many. Among other things, Galaxy has swung $10 million jersey sponsorship deal with nutrition company Herbalife. The sale of shirts and tickets, too, have shot up appreciably even before Beckham has played his first game for Galaxy. The No. 23 jersey that Beckham sports has immense value, both on the field and off it. And thats what LA Galaxy president Tim Leiweke is hoping to cash in on big time. It is extraordinary for us to get David at his peak, the club chief told a newspaper after brokering the Herbalife contract. At his peak? The jury is still out. With an undeniable crowd-puller like Beckham in its ranks, Galaxy is also poised to acquire the sort of international profile that MLS clubs have never had before. In November, the club will travel all the way to Sydney, Australia, to play an exhibition match in the 83,500-seat Telstra Stadium. That will only be the beginning of what Leiweke hopes will be a steady process of enhancement of the clubs global value in terms of both performance and revenues. Although critics of the Beckham signing argue that the footballer is on the last legs of his career and he is using the MLS only as a comfortable but lucrative sinecure, and that he is now more celebrity than athlete, there can be no denying that the iconic midfielder still has a few years of soccer left in him. His brand value is beyond an iota of doubt and if it rubs off even a fraction on the media visibility of MLS, the league is bound to benefit in the long run. When an ageing Pele, the Brazilian maestro, made the move to the now-defunct North American Soccer League in 1975, he instantly made it one of the most popular leagues in the world. While Beckham may not be quite as great as Pele as a player, his star status is second to none. The one crucial difference between the two stars of two different eras is that Pele was well past his prime when he turned out for Cosmos and Beckham, no matter what the detractors might say, isnt MLS needs him Soccer is still only a fringe sport in the US. When Pele arrived in the States over 30 years ago, soccer was a mere blip on the sporting consciousness radar in the US. That he succeeded in giving the game a certain profile, no matter how limited, was a living testimony to his enormous skills as a player and his sheer magnetism as a personality. On Beckham will rest the onus of the next big leap for MLS. The Englishman is, in a way, larger than the sport, especially in the American context. The US now has numerous players who are capable of taking on the best in the world, which wasnt the case in Peles days. If in the five years that he spends with Galaxy, Beckham can team up with his club mates to get the US media and public interested in soccer in a way that they have never been before, he would have done his job. But in attempting that onerous feat, he will have to make numerous road trips around the vast country. English soccer coach Steve McLaren is an understandably worried man. He wants the medio is fine fettle for the challenges that lie ahead. Shirt-selling exercises in the southern hemisphere may not be the best way to get there. The LA Galaxy management, to its credit, has been trying its best not to push Beckham beyond permitted endurance levels. Were mindful of giving David some rest, so were trying to be focussed on not overloading the schedule, Leiweke told a British newspaper. But the temptation will be great. This is American soccer leagues last chance to push ahead if Beckham cant do it for them nobody can and the Galaxy bosses will be aware of the opportunity. So the question is: will they be happy to let their prized acquisition, David Beckham, take it easy for a single day? They cant afford to be. Beckham has his job cut out.

BECKHAM ALREADY HAVING A COMMERCIAL IMPACT ON US SOCCER | View Clip

Sport Business International

While the media speculates as to whether David Beckham will play his first game for the LA Galaxy in Saturday's friendly against Chelsea at the Home Depot Centre, one thing is certain: Beckham is already generating significant revenue for his employers.

Since the announcement of his signing in January, the Galaxy and Major League Soccer (MLS) have been focused on selling Beckham to sponsors and fans. The effort has been an unqualified success. In addition to major shirt sponsor Herbalife ($20 million over five years), it has been reported that the Galaxy have signed other deals totaling $6 million over the past six months.

Ticket revenue has also soared with the Galaxy having increased ticket revenue by an estimated $4 million compared to last year. Friendly matches this year - which have the potential of earning the team $1 million per game - have already been scheduled against two second division professional teams in the US and Canada (Minnesota and Vancouver) and one in Sydney. The Galaxy is planning a 2008 pre-season tour of Asia and friendly matches in the UK.

US media outlets have reported that the Galaxy received orders for 250,000 Beckham shirts before his unveiling last Friday and that first day Beckham Galaxy sales exceeded those for the players first day with Real Madrid.

Beckham, however, is clearly not the only soccer attraction in MLS: Mexican star Cuauhtemoc Blanco generated a larger crowd than Beckham for his MLS unveiling in April and has likewise increased ticket sales and commercial revenue for the Chicago Fire. More designated players are expected this season and next.

USA Der Geist hinter David Beckham | View Clip

Beckham-Action in Lala-Land.

Anfang nächsten Jahres plant die L.A.

"Because he is cute and he is a good soccer player for sure" said one of the Galaxy's or Beckham's fan.

The official Beckham fever has only started now in the United States. The middle fielder of the British national team has injured during the European Cup when playing against Estonia so his swollen ankle could only kept up for 45 minutes at the first Los Angeles match.

Galaxy by the way is going to have a friendly match during this weekend with Chelsea but the participation of David Beckham is still unsure. One of the American television channels would like to focus two cameras parallel on him exclusively to follow all the movements of the player from the first moment till the last scene.

Beckham spares himself. His ankle hurts | View Clip

David Beckham on the lawn. Beckham's first training after his arrival to Los Angeles was seen by a thousand fans.

Bratislava - Beckham's match debut for Los Angeles Galaxy is in danger. His left ankle still hurts the football and marketing star and it caused that he could not finish his first training with his new team.
A little more than a thousand fans were excited about Beckham's training. He waved to the fans and smiled at them. After a short running he separated from the team and individually did stretching and exercises to strengthen his ankle.

"He did not do many in the last some days. His ankle is a little swelled up but I believe that he will recover soon and will be able to play in Saturday's match." Said to the journalists Frank Yallop, the trainer of the Galaxy. Saturday's friendly match, which will be broadcasted by ESPN to the whole world, have been sold out for a long time (27 thousand tickets).

Beckham was officially introduced to the fans last Friday with Hollywood style - with red carpet, lots of confetti and with enormous media interest. That day he participated in unbelievable number of 65 TV talk shows. His team fellows now have to get used to the extraordinary excitement around them. "This is foolish. It's like a circus. We are not used to it but it is exquisite." said Quaras Kirk, the defenseman of the Galaxy.
"During the first days he looked a little shy. I heard that he was a fine guy and now I am of the same opinion." said Landon Donovan, team-mate, about Beckham. His yearly wage is 900 000 USD and Beckham's is about 5,5 million USD. It seems that for the US Beckham is rather a celebrity living in his wife's shadow than a sportsman. "He does not appear as a sportsman but as a celebrity. The people do not consider him a muscular leader but the husband of Posh Spice." wrote the daily paper LA Times.
Nevertheless, she already managed to partake the first document
